TORBOLE HOTELS - All hotels in Torbole
At the feet of the Mount Baldo's north-western slopes lies the village of Torbole. Populated in the prehistoric times and colonized during the times of the Roman Empire it is now well-known for its richness of its flora and very good conditions for an active holiday. In the Middle Ages, the Counts d'Arco built their castle residence in the close resort of Nago and formed a community of Torbole-Nago. The village lies close to the mouth of the River Sarca and the buildings around the tiny gulf create sort of amphiteather overlooking the lake.
In the 15th century, an extraordinary event took place close to Torbole. During the Third Lombarda War, Milano was fighting against the Serenissima Republic of Venice, which tried to free Brescia from Milanese siege. In order to afford that, the Venetians needed to take control of the Lake Garda and support the Venetian army fighting against Milanese forces. Twenty five boats and six galleys were transported from the Adriatic Sea up to the harbour of Mori on the River Adige. From there, the mini Venetian fleet was transported on carts pulled by many men and 240 oxen and then lowered from the slopes of Monte Baldo into the Lake Garda at Torbole. In spring 1440 Venetian ships destroyed Riva and gained total control of the lake what allowed them to release Brescia from the Milanese siege.
