Between Bardolino and Peschiera lies the town of Lazise whose name comes from ?laceses? meaning ?place on the lake'.
The walls built by the Della Scala family in the 14th century surround the oldest part of the town, clearly medieval in origin. A tremendous castle dominates the charming setting. Built at the end of the 9th century to afford protection against the Hungarian invasions, it was modified and reinforced throughout the centuries. One of the best preserved in the Garda area today, it has a square plan with five towers and a keep. Today, the historic buildings are full of bars, restaurants and cafes where tourist spend their free time tasting traditional meals and drinking local wine. Wine, same as oil, can be bought directly from the producers what usually allows customers to sample products before purchase.
Just a couple steps away from the pictoresque harbour, you can find the Dogana Veneta from where the Republic of Venece controlled economic situation of the Lake Garda area. However, the convenient location of the vilage was recognized already in the prehistoric times - the amber route passed by Lazise.
Once, Venetian captain had to sink all his ships in order not to let it go to the enemy's hands. Today, the wrecked ships lure divers every summer being the target of many diving excursions. Another interesting spots for diving excursions should be the large underwater village accesible from Pacengo, Lazise's suburb.
